How to Feel Good About Yourself – No Matter What
When’s the last time you looked in the mirror and gave yourself a compliment? If you spoke to others the way you talk to yourself you probably wouldn’t have any friends.
Studies have shown that our self-talk affects our self-esteem, happiness and overall well-being. A well-known scientist Masaru Emoto found that our thoughts and feelings affect our physical reality. Dr. Emoto froze water and looked at it under a microscope after speaking to it. When he used words like ‘thank you’ the water formed a beautiful crystal. When he spoke the words ‘you disgust me’ it formed an ugly crystal. Since our bodies are largely made up of water it’s clear we are also being affected by our self-talk.
If it’s been a while since you’ve said something nice to yourself here are four ways to get back on track;
Accept yourself today
If you’re wishing to be anything other than what you are today, you’ll never be happy. Don’t get caught in the trap “I’ll be happier when I “pay off my debt” or “lose 20 lbs”. You may, in fact, feel a lot better about yourself when you reach your goals but using negative self-talk as a motivator won’t get you there. Accept and love yourself for where you are right now.
Have gratitude for your life
It’s tough to be thankful for your life if you have a negative self-image. Nothing good can ever come from destructive thoughts that break you down. Become aware of your self-talk and create new habits. Whenever you hear yourself saying unkind things to yourself, replace those thoughts with a mantra such as I am strong, I am healthy, I am wealthy…whatever works for you. It may feel forced in the beginning but keep saying it.
Embrace your perceived flaws
Focus on the things you love about yourself and embrace what you don’t. Sometimes your perceived flaws are what make you who you are. I can think of several well-known people whose imperfections are their signature. Instead of fixating on what you haven’t done stay focused on the progress you’ve made.
Set your own path
Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Remember, this is your life! What do you value? How do you want your life to look? If you haven’t been giving it your all and know you can do better set achievable goals and take action. You have a choice in how you feel and treat yourself.
What are some ways that help you feel better about your life? I’d love to hear from you!
